"This has really motivated me to further explore global goals and sustainability within my class and whole school. I would love to try to start collaborating with some parents as well. I have shared the information and ideas in the staff room and the other staff have shown interest too" (Teacher)

I. How parents and schools can work together in a climate emergency

On 7th February 2022 parents and teachers from across the UK (and beyond!) came together to discuss how best to work together to prepare our children for a very uncertain future. It needs to be all hands on deck! You can read the transcript from the event here.

II. What learning for sustainability meanS in practise

‘Equipping children for an uncertain future - what role for parents, educators and communities?’ October 2021

Hear from a primary school teacher in Dunblane, who has successfully embedded sustainability in the curriculum and a parent food educator who has developed a health- and sustainability-focused food curriculum for a London primary school.

overview

The Scottish Sustainable Schools Network (SSSN) is a new, informal advisory network of educators and parents of nursery and primary school-age children in Scotland and is part of the UK Schools Sustainability Network. The Network’s primary objectives are:

  • to provide parents and educators with the knowledge of what nurseries/schools can do as institutions to be more sustainable;

  • to embed sustainability in learning by sharing resources, best practice and strategies that achieve long-lasting change;

  • to offer a supportive community that inspires and motivates parents to use their voice and build effective partnerships with nurseries and schools.

I’m a Mum of two young children (5 and 8) in Fife. Parents have a key role to play in encouraging and supporting schools to take advantage of all the free resources, initiatives and good practice out there. I have set up the Network to support and inspire parents and educators so our children are better prepared for an uncertain future. There is no fixed time commitment - I know how busy you all are! - and members can simply join in when they are able to.

"Thanks very much for your marvellous and comprehensive newsletter. It is so helpful to have this round-up of what’s going on, opportunities etc all in one place" (Parent)

That was incredible, so inspiring. Plenty of food for thought and, more importantly, for action.
